Over the past year, I've become more interested in investing in higher quality makeup. I'm by no means a makeup artist or someone who even knows a lot about the subject, but I've been gaining a few skills and tools lately. I recently decided to start using a website called Ipsy. When you sign up with them, you receive a fun little package every month containing 5 beauty samples catered to you according to your beauty profile. It even comes with a cute little makeup bag! The subscription is $10 per month and it's super fun. Other benefits of being a member include the ability to earn points to put towards other rewards and big discounts on the purchase of other makeup items. I haven't been blown away by all of my bags so far (this is only my third), but it's really fun to receive every month and the amount of items I've received that I loved have been well worth the $10. Here is what I got this month!
1. Luxie Beauty: Matte Eyeshadow Pan No. 290
Ipsy's Description: "Don’t just add eggplant to your diet, color your lids with Aubergine! Soft as sateen and gentle on the skin, this hypoallergenic, mineral-free and paraben-free eyeshadow will have you asking for seconds. Infused with vitamin C & E to condition and protect the lids, this shadow is also perfect for those with sensitive skin.
- 100% Cruelty-free
- Vitamin C & E Infused
My Review: First and foremost - since Ipsy described this color as "eggplant" and it looked pretty purple in the pan, I expected it to be more of a purpley-mauve than it actually was. It looked more brown than I expected, but was still a pretty color. Also, I'm not sure if it was just the new brush I was using and that I wasn't getting a whole lot of product on the brush, but it didn't seem super pigmented. That being said, I really like the eyeshadow and I applied it in my crease. For the rest, I used my naked3 palette.
2. Jelly Pong Pong: Liquid Gossamer
Ipsy's Description: "A lightweight, water-based luminizer that gives skin instant radiance while keeping it moisturized at the same time. Formulated with ultra-fine, light-refracting coated mica pigments in a sheer, soft cream that gives your skin an ethereal, youthful-looking glow.
- 78% Natural
- No Parabens
- No Animal By-Products"
My Review: I wan't really a big fan of this. I don't use luminizers often, since whenever I do contouring I use my Anastasia Beverly Hills kit. This has a very pink color to it. I squeezed some out onto my finger, and then dotted it along my brow bones, my cheek bones, and the center of my nose. It dried very quickly, so when I went to blend it with my brush it was sort of difficult. It didn't really seem to illuminate well, either. It just looked like a very sheer pinkish color on my cheeks.
3. Crown Brush: Deluxe Pointed Crease Brush
Ipsy's Description: "This handcrafted professional pointed crease brush is perfectly tapered to give you optimum coverage and color in the crease.
- The fluffy tip works well for blending multiple colors
- Perfect for layering color or creating a smokey eye"
My Review: One thing that I haven't invested in a whole lot is brushes, so I was super excited to receive this in my glam bag! I don't know a whole lot about brushes, but I liked this one pretty well. It was extremely soft and flexible, and seemed to do a good job blending. It makes it hard to put too much eyeshadow on at a time, which is a plus since I tend to overdo it sometimes, making it difficult to blend. I did notice that it seemed like quite a few little hairs from the brush ended up on my cheeks, but that wasn't a big deal.
4. Figs & Rouge: Mattifying Emulsion & Pore Refiner
Ipsy's Description: "Figs & Rouge Mattifying Emulsion & Pore refiner provides sheer matte coverage for daily shine control. Developed with a clinically proven formula, it helps diminish blemishes & outbreaks with regular daily use.
- Refines & Minimizes pores
- Controls shine in an instant
- Creates a luxurious 'velvety touch' effect
- Clinically proven ingredients that helps control breakouts & supports clearer complexion"
My Review: I generally use Mac's primer, so one thing I noticed right away about this one is that it's more of a liquid formula. I squeezed a bit out on my finger and it was very runny. Another thing I was a little nervous about is the fact that it flakes pretty easily. You have to be pretty careful when applying your foundation not to use too much pressure and move the primer around. If you do, it turns sort of flaky, and looks a bit like dry skin. That being said, I feel like I did notice a difference when it came to my pores and how matte my face looked. I'll definitely keep trying this.
5. Smashbox Cosmetics: Full Exposure Mascara
Ipsy's Description: "Inspired by the on-set technique of layering a lengthening fiber mascara over a volumizing formula, this new studio-tested mascara exposes your longest, fullest lashes. No clumps, no flakes. Just maximum-impact, scene-stealing lashes.
- 104% increase in lash volume
- 32% increase in lash length
- 34-degree increase in lash curl"
My Review: I can be sort of picky about mascara, but I'm always up for trying a new formula. I actually liked this one pretty well, although it's definitely not my favorite mascara. I'm not a big fan of the brush, since it didn't seem to comb through my eyelashes super well. There wasn't much clumping, although I did go through it with a clean mascara brush after application to get rid of any little clumps that were there. I like my mascara a bit more dramatic sometimes, so I liked the way it looked better after two coats. Not a whole lot goes on with the first coat. But, all in all, I like the mascara and I'll definitely be using it on days that I don't use my Better Than Sex mascara!
